Windows 10 Feature Updates

Microsoft now provides Windows 10 feature updates. This allows for more timely updates that add new capabilities for us. Some features include new user experiences, increased productivity and protection against modern security threats. Microsoft’s new model of deploying change is called Windows as a Service (or WaaS). San Jacinto College ITS will start installing Feature updates on Windows 10 machines beginning July 2nd, 2018. This allows the College to stay compliant with Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy.

Here’s how it works:

Feature updates will be installed each summer (starting the first week in July). If deemed necessary, significant security or productivity enhancement updates will be installed each winter (starting the first week in January).

Updates will be installed during regular ITS Maintenance Windows, which include:

Monday – Friday 10:30 PM – 6:30 AM
Saturday 5:00PM – Sunday 12:00 PM

You must leave your computer on and plugged into the College network with your network cable during the timelines listed above (no wireless please). This is required for the update to take place outside of business hours since the upgrade may take up to two hours to complete.

Once successfully completed, you will login and your unique profile will be configured. You should see the following screen while the profile is updated.

I have a laptop. What happens if I miss the update cycle because I am off-campus? No worries! Simply leave your laptop connected to the College network when you return and the update will install during the ITS Maintenance Window.

Please contact Tech Support at x6137 (on-campus) or 281-998-6137 (off-campus) should you encounter any issues.
