Applying and Modifying Themes in PowerPoint 2010

PowerPoint 2010 provides users with a versatile platform for creating visually pleasing presentations. San Jac employees and students can use PowerPoint to create informative slideshows for meetings, assignments, or a variety of other tasks. One of the appealing features of PowerPoint is that users can quickly and easily develop a professional looking presentation with a few simple clicks; thanks to a variety of built-in templates already available.


Applying a Theme

  1. Click on the Design tab at the top of the screen.
  2. Within the Themes section of the ribbon, several built-in templates are available for use. To select a theme, simply click on it. You can also preview a theme by hovering your mouse over each theme for one to two seconds.

Note: To view additional pre-installed themes, use the arrow keys to the right of the Themes section to navigate.


Adjusting Fonts

Once you have selected a theme, you can adjust the font schema by completing the following steps:

  1. Under the Design tab, click on the Fonts menu.
  2. In the drop-down menu that appears, select a font theme you would like to use. Once again, you can preview the new font by hovering your mouse over each for one to two seconds.
  3. If you would like to use custom fonts, click on Create New Theme Fonts at the bottom of the menu.
  4. In the dialog box that appears, enter the following information and then click on Save.
    1. Use the drop-down menu to select a Heading Font.
    2. Use the drop-down menu to select a Body Font.
    3. Enter a name for the theme font in the provided text box.

Modifying Colors

To adjust the color scheme of your presentation, follow these steps:

  1. Under the Design tab, click on the Colors menu.
  2. In the drop-down menu that appears, select a color scheme you would like to use. Once again, you can preview the new colors by hovering your mouse over each for one to two seconds.
  3. If you would like to use custom fonts, click on Create New Theme Colors at the bottom of the menu.
  4. In the dialog box that appears, click on each color box to modify the colors accordingly, then enter a name for the scheme in the provided text box and click on Save. Please be aware that it may take several attempts to get the colors exactly how you would like them.

Note: If you need to make changes to a custom theme, click on the Colors menu, right-click on the custom color theme, and select Edit from the menu that appears.


Applying Effects

PowerPoint comes equipped with several theme effects that change the look and feel of various design elements; such as shapes, graphics, and SmartArt. To change up the theme effects, follow these steps:

  1. Under the Design tab, click on the Effects menu.
  2. In the drop-down menu that appears, select an effect scheme you would like to use. Once again, you can preview the effects by hovering your mouse over each for one to two seconds.

Tip: When it comes to effects, it may be better to already have your design elements in place before selecting a theme effect.


Changing the Background

You can modify the background of a PowerPoint presentation by completing these steps:

  1. Under the Design tab, click on the Background Styles menu.
  2. In the drop-down menu that appears, select a background you would like to use. Once again, you can preview the background by hovering your mouse over each for one to two seconds.
  3. If you would like to use custom fonts, click on Format Background at the bottom of the menu.
  4. In the dialog box that appears, you have several options available for changing the background; such as changing the color, applying a pattern, or adding a picture.

Wrapping Up

Now that you have customized your selected theme, you can go through each slide to adjust font sizes and to add any additional text/graphics that you need. Remember, you can always go back and make modifications to the theme to better suit your presentation.
