Configuring Pop-Up Blockers for the SanJac Website

Like most websites, the San Jacinto College site utilizes pop-ups when navigating the site or accessing a number of online systems. Most people don’t particularly like pop-up windows that appear when browsing the web (not to mention possible security issues), which is why several browsers have implemented blockers that prevent external windows from appearing. While extremely useful, the downside is that these pop-up blockers can potentially block you from accessing those sites you’re trying to reach; such as S.O.S.

The quickest and easiest method would be to simply disable your browser’s pop-up blocker; however, by doing so, you’re not only allowing pop-ups for the SanJac site, but for all sites. So, while this method may work, it’s not recommended. Instead, you can configure your browser’s blocker to block all pop-ups while allowing them for other sites you trust.

The steps below provide instructions on how to configure Internet Explorer and Firefox to only allow pop-ups for certain websites. You can use these instructions, not just for the San Jac website, but for any site you wish. Remember, it’s best to only configure blocker settings to allow pop-ups from sites that you know and trust.

Internet Explorer 8:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. Click on the Tools menu, go to Pop-up Blocker, and select Pop-up Blocker Settings from the menu that appears.
  3. A dialog box will appear that allows you to configure your pop-up blocker settings. Add the full web address you wish to allow pop-up blockers for to the Address of Website to Allow text field.
  4. Click the Add button. The website will immediately be added to the Allowed Sites list.
  5. Click on Close.
  6. For changes to take effect, you may need to completely close Internet Explorer and re-launch a new session.

Firefox 4:

  1. Launch Firefox.
  2. Firefox may provide one of two visual displays. Depending on how Firefox displays on your screen, click on the Firefox button at the top left corner of the screen and select Options OR click on the Tools menu and select Options. (See screenshot)
  3. In the dialog box that appears, click on the Content tab.
  4. Click on the Exceptions button next to Block Pop-Up Windows.
  5. Add the full web address you wish to allow pop-up blockers for to the Address of Website text field.
  6. Click the Allow button. The website will immediately be added to the provided table.
  7. Click on Close.
  8. Click on OK to close the Options screen.
  9. For changes to take effect, you may need to completely close Internet Explorer and re-launch a new session.
