Weekly Update – May 1, 2009

Good Afternoon San Jacinto Employees –

Today is May 1st – my first day as Chancellor at San Jacinto College. I am honored to hold this position, and I do not take its responsibilities lightly.  While I know many of you, I look forward to getting to know you better and to meeting those of you whom I haven’t run across in the past.  I am anxious to work with each of you.

The month of May will be busy for us. Not only do we have finals and graduation, but it is also a critical time in the legislative process. I expect to be spending much of May in Austin, attending hearings and sessions and meeting with legislators. There is nervousness regarding the session and its outcomes, but hopefully, we will have answers by early June.

We are also a bit anxious as we continue to hear about the H1N1 flu (swine flu). I assure you that the situation is being monitored, and we will continue to respond quickly as the situation changes. Updates will be posted on the SJC website, and you will be receiving regular emails from Ginger Lambert on safety issues, James Fowler on policy and processes, and Laurel Williamson on instructional concerns. I will also provide regular updates and summaries.  We are approaching this with caution and not over-reaction. If you have concerns on a H1N1 issue, please direct your questions to Ginger, and she will direct you to the proper resource.

I plan to be spending more time at the campuses over the next few months in order to gain a better understanding of concerns and benefits impacting the campuses and related services. I will be developing additional communication media over the next few months in order to continue to build more open and transparent communications. To that regard, I will be sending out weekly updates through the month of May to keep you posted on major activities.

Have a great weekend.

Warmly,

Brenda Hellyer
