Update – October 3, 2017

on October 3, 2017 in Weekly Update

Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

October is here and I hear autumn is in the air (maybe that is further north), but I am still hopeful our temps will reach a high in the 70’s soon!  I hope all of you are doing well as we continue to move forward with life and the semester after Harvey.  I know that many of you are still dealing with your own recovery efforts, and I hope you are getting closer to normal with each passing day.

I am extremely proud of the work that has happened throughout San Jacinto College over this past month.  Thank you for continuing to reach out to support your fellow employees, the community, and our students.  I want to thank the employees and supporters who contributed to the San Jacinto College Employee and Student Relief Fund.  The need was tremendous, but it was amazing how resources were made available to provide some small assistance to those impacted by Harvey.  I thank the San Jacinto College Foundation (Foundation) for its efforts to raise and allocate funds to assist our people on such short notice.  Approximately 97 employees received assistance, 255 students received disaster textbook relief funds, and approximately 93 students received additional disaster emergency funds.   The Foundation is still working through a significant number of requests from students, with more coming in daily, which are dependent on additional funds being raised.

Our faculty members have been working through instructional recovery plans with their peers and department chairs.  Our student support and business and operations areas have made accommodations to assist students as appropriate.  As of this morning, our unduplicated enrollment was at an all-time high of 31,691 students, with all campuses experiencing increases over last year. Throughout San Jacinto College, we continue to be focused on retaining students through the completion of the semester.  I offer a special thanks to each one of you for your special efforts!!

September is a month that we aren’t likely to forget anytime soon, but I do hope we can remember a few things other than Harvey.  How about these three:

  1. September 18, 2017, represented the 56th anniversary of when San Jacinto College first began classes back in 1961 in a rented facility in downtown Pasadena.
  2. September 20, 2017, was the official groundbreaking of the Center for Petrochemical, Energy, and Technology which will be housed off of Fairmont and Cunningham at the Central Campus.  Over 200 college representatives, industry partners, and community members were present for the official ceremony!  Take a look at this video about what will be housed in this new facility when it opens for classes in fall 2019.
  3. September 27, 2017, Matt Lewis was named the American Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) 2017 National Faculty Member of the year!  Matt has been a math faculty member at the South Campus for the last eight years. In August he was named the ACCT Western Region Faculty Member of the Year.  Being named the Western Region Faculty Member was cool but being named the National Faculty Member is absolutely outstanding!  Matt exemplifies the innovation, collaboration, and passion that is part of the San Jacinto College culture!

As I close today, I know that October has started out a little rocky for our country.  I ask that you keep our fellow Americans in your thoughts and prayers. I continue to believe that we are stronger together!
