Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community –

Happy New Year!  It has been a busy first week of January!

Many of you have heard that last night and today, President Obama unveiled his America’s College Proposal for two years of free community college education to responsible students.  It is exciting that the president continues to stress the important role that community colleges plays in the life of students and the future of our country.  Like any proposal to help our students, we are anxiously awaiting additional details.

I wanted to share the information that I received earlier this afternoon with you because I am sure you and many others that you will encounter over the next few days will have questions.  The information is limited but hopefully this will provide you a context to understand the proposal as we understand it at this point.  See the email and links below.

Again, Happy New Year!  And try to stay warm!!

Subject: Tuition-Free Community College for Responsible Students

This is an exciting and significant announcement to begin the new year with!  Yesterday, President Obama unveiled his plan to make two years of college as free and universal as high school. The America’s College Promise proposal is intended to make two years of community college free for responsible students, letting students earn the first half of a bachelor’s degree and earn skills needed in the workforce. In addition, he proposed a new American Technical Training Fund to expand innovative, high-quality technical training programs that meet employer needs and help prepare more Americans for better paying jobs.

Visit the OCTAE Community College website and see “What’s New” to learn more about the America’s College Promise proposal.

More information regarding the proposal will be forthcoming later today and in the coming weeks. You can follow the conversation on social media with the trending #FreeCommunityCollege hashtag, and also watch the President’s video message and read the White House blog at this link.

We appreciate your support in sharing this information widely with your interested networks.

Please note, the regular publication of the OCTAE Connections newsletter will resume on January 15, 2015. Take care and thanks for all that you do for our nation’s community and technical colleges and the students that are served by them.
