on May 30, 2009 in Weekly Update

I just went for a walk/jog and the weather is perfect!! Hope you enjoy it!!

I hope all of you had a great Memorial Day holiday. It’s such a wonderful time to remember all of those who have served our country and paid the price for our freedom. For all of you who have served in the United States military – THANK YOU!

I started off my week in Austin attending the NISOD conference with several of you. San Jacinto College had 22 presenters leading 14 different sessions on a wide range of topics including leadership, teaching tools and innovations, early college academy, Hurricane Ike response, faculty professional development, distance learning, and our QEP. San Jacinto College also had a magnificent booth at the exhibit hall. I heard from several non-SJC attendees that ours was the best booth with the nicest people!! Also congratulations to our nine Excellence Award recipients who were honored at the conference!!

On Thursday, I attended a reception celebrating the partnership between the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and the Pasadena Hispanic Business Council. This is an important step for the businesses of Pasadena. San Jacinto College has worked closely with both entities, and it is great to see our community come together.

On the legislative front, we are still hopeful that SB 42 will be passed which will provide a long term solution for the proportionality issue. My latest update showed that it was back in the Senate with support to keep it moving. I was in contact with Senator Jackson this week, and he is quite supportive of our position on this bill. At the Federal level, our funding requests are still moving forward. I spoke with Congressman Pete Olson at the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership meeting on Wednesday. He is supportive and optimistic about the request. He is also interested in coming out and visiting our campuses.

Lastly, I offer my congratulations to the coaches and players on the baseball team who ended their season with a fourth place finish at the national tournament. I know they won’t be happy with anything less than first place, but your college is proud of you. Great job on a successful season!

Let’s kick off June with little extra spunk!
