Good Evening San Jacinto College Community,

I hope you stayed warm this week-end!  When I hear about the weather in the northern and eastern parts of our country, I know that we have nothing to complain about, but, gosh, those were chilly temperatures for southeast Texas!!

Black History Month:  Since 1976, every American President has designated February as Black History Month.  San Jacinto College has a variety of activities scheduled to celebrate Black History Month so be sure to check out the events.

College Community Day Follow-up: Thanks to each of you who completed the assignment that I gave during my update session at College Community Day. As I said in my presentation, if you have any additional feedback for the assignment that you would like to provide, please send your handout via interoffice mail or reply to this email address (chancellor@sjcd.edu) by Wednesday, February 13th.  I read through the responses and feedback over the weekend; and overall, the comments were supportive and positive about the values, vision, and mission.  Read the rest of this entry »

Good Morning San Jacinto College Community,

Today (September 18th) is an important date in history for San Jacinto College.  At 8:30 a.m. on September 18, 1961, San Jacinto College opened its doors in an old store front in downtown Pasadena to register its first students.  History has it that the lines formed on the sidewalks of downtown Pasadena long before the doors opened, and that registration continued until 10:00 p.m. that evening.  The tally at the end of the registration period on that first day was that more than 700 students had enrolled.  By the end of the week, enrollment reached 876 students. With this, San Jacinto College set a record for first year enrollment for Texas junior colleges, and the total was the second largest first year enrollment for all Texas colleges.  Read the rest of this entry »

Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

October is here and I hear autumn is in the air (maybe that is further north), but I am still hopeful our temps will reach a high in the 70’s soon!  I hope all of you are doing well as we continue to move forward with life and the semester after Harvey.  I know that many of you are still dealing with your own recovery efforts, and I hope you are getting closer to normal with each passing day.

I am extremely proud of the work that has happened throughout San Jacinto College over this past month.  Thank you for continuing to reach out to support your fellow employees, the community, and our students.  I want to thank the employees and supporters who contributed to the San Jacinto College Employee and Student Relief Fund.  Read the rest of this entry »

Good Morning San Jacinto College Community,

Happy New Year!  This information is to update you on changes to the student services area of San Jacinto College.

Over the past year, we began discussions about what was needed in student services in order to facilitate seamless pathways for our students “from front door to completion.”  Laurel Williamson, Human Resources staff, and the student services leadership team began a series of meetings to map out our current student services structures and processes and ask hard questions about where students encountered barriers or confusion in the application, testing, admissions, financial aid, advising, and counseling processes.  We wanted to know what worked (or didn’t) for students.  We looked at other institutions for best practices, interviewed students, and discussed issues and barriers with staff members. The major changes have to do with re-designing our entry processes, the review and acceptance of applications and admissions paperwork, the deployment of our shared educational planner program and their placement within the organization, the re-design of enrollment services and a change from “enrollment specialist” to “admissions advisor,” and a move from the First Year Experience concept to the idea that students need support from entry to exit. Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community:

I hope the fall semester is going well for each of you. The excitement with the start of the semester is still in the air, and each of us has a role in encouraging that excitement in our students. It takes a holistic approach to ensure students feel welcomed and understand the expectations of going to college, and know where to find support when they need it. Significant work happens in the classroom with the faculty members teaching, challenging, and engaging students, but we also know how important it is that each of us takes a moment to assist a student or visitor on campus or to offer a word of encouragement. Students often don’t know all the services and support we have to offer when they need tutoring, counseling, or other assistance.  I am attaching a list of the many support services we have on campuses, as a refresher for each of us. Remember that these services are critical in addressing the many needs in our students’ lives. Read the rest of this entry »

Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community –

The end of the fall semester and calendar year are near. I suspect that everyone is feeling the extra pressure that comes with the busy-ness of this time. It is always a challenge to balance the extra stress, excitement, work load, and time constraints. Add onto that the bizarre temperature swings we are experiencing, from near record highs today to highs in the 40s later this week. Perhaps you can relate to Henry Kissinger who said, “There cannot be a crisis next week.  My schedule is already full.” Hang in there.  The semester is coming to a close soon.

In this Update, I would like to let you know about some important topics that I hope will be helpful for you: Read the rest of this entry »

Good Morning San Jacinto College Community –

I hope all of you are enjoying the great fall weather and the many activities that are going on throughout the college.

TV Coverage of College Activities

We just wrapped up Hispanic Heritage Month. I was very impressed with the multitude of activities and we even got some airtime on Channel 13! Speaking of airtime, we also had a great piece run on the process technology program on Channel 26 just last Thursday! I appreciate all of you who respond when the media calls. They don’t give us much notice, and they want responses quickly or they move on to another college or program, and we definitely don’t want them doing that! Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

I hate to start out with the weather, but how can one avoid it with the kind of records that we are setting?  I moved to Houston from Kansas via Colorado, and I always tell people that I can handle the heat and humidity until about August and then I get a little cranky.  This year I may have to move that “a little cranky” up a few months!!  I do hope you are finding a “cool” way to handle the heat!
