Good evening San Jacinto College Community –

As Chancellor of the San Jacinto Community College District, one of my key goals and ultimate responsibilities is to help create and foster the best possible work environment for everyone in our organization. Good Morning San Jacinto College Community,

Please join me in welcoming Chester (Chet) Lewis as our new Vice Chancellor, Fiscal Affairs.

Chet comes to San Jacinto College with seventeen years senior leadership experience. Chet joins us from Texas Southmost College, formerly part of UT Brownsville, where Chet served as the Associate Vice President of Business Affairs while part of UT Brownsville and Vice President of Finance and Administration once the two entities separated. During his tenure with UT Brownsville, Chet was responsible for the Budget Office, Business Office, Purchasing, Fort Brown Memorial Center, Recordkeeping, and Central Receiving. Good Evening San Jacinto Community! And to our Veterans on this day of remembrance, thank you for your service, dedication, and sacrifice.

I hope many of you joined in the Veterans Day activities this weekend, including the events at each campus last Friday. I spent Sunday calling my family members who have served our country, and I also let them know that they will be honored with a plaque on the Wall of Honor at our San Jacinto College Veterans Centers. Weekly Update – November 15, 2009

Three days of this past week were spent working with the San Jacinto College’s Achieving the Dream coaches, Dr. Byron McClenney and Dr. Brad Philips.  McClenney is the project director of the national Achieving the Dream initiative. He’s had a 43 year career as an educator including 33 years as a president/chancellor at several community colleges including the Community College of Denver, Kingsborough Community College, and Alamo Community College District. Phillips is the founder and Executive Director of Cal-PASS, an initiative that collects, analyzes and shares student data in order to track performance and improve success from elementary school through university; more than 6,800 schools and colleges participate in Cal-PASS. I am thrilled that the College has their expertise working with us.

Weekly Update – October 25, 2009

What a week-end! Hope you are enjoying a little of it!! 

For many administrators, this week began with a day and a half spent on program review. We looked at several instructional programs, including visual and performing arts, college preparatory, English, foreign languages, and speech. While I left with several questions I’d like to address, the information presented helped me gain a much greater understanding of several concerns including faculty staffing levels, equipment and facility needs, and budget. As we continue to develop the process, I envision that the program review presentation will first address college-wide priorities, vision, and implications; and the process would then focus on specific benefits and concerns at each campus. I also envision a greater discussion around student success, student learning outcomes, and the data that support our conclusions and proposed changes. Program review clearly fits into our continuous improvement model of plan, do, check, and act. Thank you to all who presented and to those who listened, discussed, and questioned.

Weekly Update – October 11, 2009

Looks like today will be a day for inside activities – hopefully, good football, good movies, good reading, or good shopping!!

On Monday, the Board of Trustees held a workshop followed by their monthly meeting.  The main topic of the workshop was the college preparatory institutional effectiveness report. The Board reviewed this report in advance of the workshop and then spent an hour reviewing the data with the Strategic Leadership Team, College Preparatory Dean, and Director of Institutional Research. The Board members were supportive of our work in this area and reinforced their commitment to college preparatory and student success. Although I am disappointed that we are not seeing the needle move as quickly as I had hoped, we will stay focused and continue to make student success in college preparatory a college-wide commitment. We will continue to collect and analyze data so we can implement and invest in holistic strategies and interventions to move that needle.  We know that moving more students through college preparatory programs is the only way that they will be able to reach their post-secondary education goals and to improve their lives and the lives of their families.

Good Afternoon!

Okay, I have been saying it for months but now I know it is close.  The summer heat is almost over  — with September just around the corner I am hopeful that we will get a reprieve any day now!!  

I want to begin with a big “thank you” to each of you.  I have seen the preliminary enrollment numbers, and each campus will see increases in the double digits (preliminary enrollment reports will be distributed to all employees on Monday).  We suspected this would occur because generally the enrollment at community colleges has an inverse relationship with the economy (i.e. in a difficult economy, community college enrollment increases).  Thank you for responding to our students’ needs and putting together the extra faculty, classes, and services to get these students advised, prepared, and enrolled. Also a special thanks to the facilities and grounds personnel who are responding with a temporary parking lot at South Campus in order to handle the 300+ cars that are parking on the grass.  Responding to these type of increases is no easy endeavor, and at times, it can be frustrating for all parties involved.  Now, while the first enrollment steps are complete, the real work for all of us begins — how to help our students meet their educational goals.  Remember it will take each of us as we actualize our goal of “Just One More.”

Weekly Update – August 16, 2009

We are about a week away from the start of the fall semester, and I know many of you are very busy getting students registered and ready for the start of classes.  For those faculty members who were not teaching this summer…welcome back! And for all of our new employees…welcome aboard!

COMPTROLLER COMBS VISITS

This week we had the privilege of welcoming State Comptroller Susan Combs and several of her staff members to the College. The Comptroller is a strong supporter of community colleges and has initiated a program called “Texas Works: Training and Education for all Texans.” She has also authorized millions of dollars to fund equipment, scholarships, and other start-up costs for new programs.  At the meeting on Central Campus, each campus was represented by its technical dean, and we had an opportunity to provide information about several programs centered on workforce demand and technical training.  In turn, Ms. Combs and her staff provided insight on the types of projects that may qualify for funding and the criteria that would make one project more attractive over another.  She stressed demographics, return on investment, and collaborative partnerships. It was a great visit, and a special thank you to Steve Horton and his office for all of their work to ensure that the visit was successful.

It’s been a busy week but my focus for this weekly update will be on the next fiscal year.  The Board of Trustees met on Monday night (August 3rd) and approved our annual priorities and our budget. Both of these are for fiscal year 2009-2010 which begins on September 1, 2009 (our New Year’s Kick-off).
