Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

Today, I would like to provide you updates on three items:

  1. New benefit cost structure for employees hired effective August 1, 2019
  2. Strategic planning items
  3. Celebration luncheons planned for May 3, 2019

New Benefit Cost Structure:

At the April 8, 2019 meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the creation of a new benefit cost structure that will be implemented effective on August 1, 2019. This will only affect employees who begin full-time employment, or are rehired as full-time employees, with the College after July 31, 2019.

As we continue to prepare for the future, we know San Jacinto College’s financial health and fiscal sustainability are critical to ensuring that we continue to serve our community well in the coming decades. As part of our routine sustainability and cost review, we are always looking at operations and current and past practices. Read the rest of this entry »

Good afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

I hope you are enjoying the summer and finding time to take vacation.  Many people seem to think that those of us in higher education do not work in the summer, and I always have to chuckle over that because there is tremendous activity this time of year at San Jacinto College. But I hope with all of that busy-ness that you find some down time and do a few fun things this summer with family and friends!  Or maybe just a break at home or on the beach.  And don’t forget to stay cool and hydrated! Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community –

It has been a busy summer!  As we start the fall semester, I wanted to give you a few updates.

The College’s Strategic Plan Extended through 2015

The College’s strategic plan for 2010 through 2013 was approved by the Board of Trustees in September 2010. Over the past three years, we have made considerable progress on the College’s four strategic goals of: Student Success, P-16 Pipeline, Workforce & Economic Development, and Our People. These strategic focus areas have served us well, but it was agreed that there is still more work to be done. Therefore, the Board of Trustees, SLT, and myself have agreed to extend the strategic plan through 2015. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

We are two weeks into the fall semester, and I hope that all of you have recuperated from the hectic pace and the long lines that go with the kick-off of a semester. Now that the semester is underway, we need to move into our “Just One More” focus, which is based on the premise that each of us (all staff, administrators, and faculty) has a role in encouraging students to stay committed to completing their classes successfully and finishing the semester. We want our students to finish what they start.  This begins with one class, one semester, and then, ultimately, certificates and degrees. Those certificates and degrees translate into completion for us, but they translate into accomplishment and achievement for our students and marketable credentials for jobs. Hello San Jacinto College Community –

The Economic Environment and Our Response

This past week has been a roller coaster with our country’s debt structure, credit rating, and stock market. The Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) and I are evaluating the potential impact this uncertainty may have on the College, and we are generating ideas and options about how to proceed if we need to change course (i.e. investment strategies, enrollment implications, etc.).  If you have any ideas you want the SLT to consider, please let me know. Our employees are always an innovative source of new ideas and solutions, and I welcome your input. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

Last week, I asked the question if any of you ran the marathon, and I received responses from four of our people who ran in it.  Two even finished under 3 hours and 51 minutes!! So this week, I am going to ask if there is anyone who has ever played in a Super Bowl Game. Or, has anyone who’s attended a Super Bowl Game?  I am anxious to hear the responses on this one!!  For the rest of us, enjoy the game or find some quiet time to enjoy a few hours of relaxation. Dear Fellow San Jacinto College Employees –

Over the past few days, we have heard the budget deficit news from Austin plus, we have seen the first rendition of House Bill 1 (HB1).  On the state deficit side, the comptroller released a shortfall number of $26.8 billion. We have also heard differing opinions about whether or not the amount is accurate and whether or not the calculations are correct.  In addition, the “new” numbers being discussed are all over the place – some have increased and some have decreased that deficit. Adding to these dimensions are clear directives about no new taxes and debates about whether or not fees are taxes, whether or not legalized gambling is a solution, the use or no use of rainy day funds, etc. Discussions and debates are focused on solutions for achieving the required balanced budget, but there are significant distracting elements, including the proposed closing of four community colleges. Hello San Jacinto College Community –

Happy 2011! I hope all of you enjoyed the break and are ready for a new year and a new semester. The transition from holiday mode to full-speed ahead is not an easy one, but hopefully you have recharged and are energized about our work here at San Jacinto College. Read our vision and mission statements along with our values and you will realize just how important that work is!!  Give it a try right now:

Vision

San Jacinto College will be the leader in educational excellence and in the achievement of equity among diverse populations. We will empower students to achieve their goals, redefine their expectations, and encourage their exploration of new opportunities. Our passions are people, learning, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Mission

Our mission is to ensure student success, create seamless transitions, and enrich the quality of life in the communities we serve.

Our Values

Integrity: Ethical and Professional
“We act in ways which instill confidence and trust”

Excellence: In Everything We Do
“We achieve quality results in everything we do”

Accountability: It’s Up to Us
“We take responsibility for our commitments and outcomes”

Innovation: Lead the Way
“We apply our knowledge, skill, insight, and imagination to recognize opportunities, solve problems, and recommend new solutions”

Sense of Community: Caring for Those We Serve and Ourselves
“We demonstrate genuine concern for the well-being of our students, our community and ourselves”

Student Success: Our Ultimate Measure
“We enable students to achieve their goals”

Diversity: Celebrate the Differences
“We celebrate the diversity of ideas and cultures”

Collaboration: We work Together
“We work together for the benefit of the college”

These are quite powerful statements, but more importantly they aren’t just statements: they are the essence of San Jacinto College. Additionally, we have established our four strategic goals of Student Success, P-16 Pipeline, Workforce & Economic Development, and Our People. These goals and the related strategies and annual priorities are aligned and focused on realizing our mission and vision as we live out our values.

Before the break, the Strategic Leadership Communication Council (SLCC) assembled for its kick-off meeting. This Council represents over 80 people, including the president and president elect of each employee group and the direct and indirect reports to the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) members through Deans and Managers. The members of the SLCC are charged with understanding the College’s strategic direction, which is detailed by the vision and mission statements, the strategic plan, and the annual priorities.  Each member’s responsibility is to understand our challenges, opportunities, and possibilities so they can lead and guide other employees throughout the organization in understanding the College’s strategic direction.  Part of this is making sure that everyone is familiar with the College’s vision, mission, strategic plan, and annual priorities. Their second charge is to serve as a strategic communication avenue for the College to ensure that information is being disseminated and shared throughout the organization and that those messages are consistent and accurate. This group has broad representation because it is critical that our efforts are aligned in order to be effective. It doesn’t matter if you are credit or non-credit, in the classroom or in the library, in the business office or in facilities, or if you are faculty, staff, or administrator, because we are all working together for the same goals and purpose.

One of my final messages to the group was to set the stage for moving forward and to reflect on what has been accomplished—we have a vision, mission, strategic plan, and strategic calendar. We have spent much time as an organization on planning and developing a guide. The road is not perfectly mapped out. In this world of change, it can’t be. But we are positioning San Jacinto College to continue to do its business competitively in the future, which will require that we all work together to be well-informed, proactive, and innovative thinkers.

The updated membership of the SLCC and its charter can be viewed by clicking on the words.  If you have questions about what was discussed at our first meeting, contact any of the members. Also, regarding the strategic plan, I will be distributing the formal document (it looks great!) to all faculty and administrators at College Community Week. Over the next couple of weeks, it will be distributed to all staff members through intercampus mail and will be mailed to part-time faculty. Please read it and keep it close at hand!

As we kick off 2011, our focus continues to be on accomplishing our annual priorities and providing excellent instruction and services to our students. Preliminary enrollment numbers reflect a significant increase at all three campuses. This next week will be busy as I anticipate more students rushing in for the last week of registration.

This year will be challenging, especially as we head into the 82nd Legislative Session. I spent much of last week having “send-off” meetings with our State representatives and senators. While their messages were consistent regarding the significance of the deficit and the difficulty of the session and the decisions that need to be made, they were supportive of San Jacinto College and our work. I will be spending a great deal of time in Austin over the next six to eight months, as will Teri Fowlé, Associate Vice Chancellor of Marketing and Communications. We will send you updates on happenings in Austin but also watch the information posted on the website for the Texas Association of Community Colleges (www.tacc.org).

Welcome back!  Have a great week!

Best,
BH
