Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

I hope all of you are enjoying this cool weather as we welcome the month of November!  This is a clear sign that the fall semester is ticking down for our students, faculty, staff, and administrators.  Speaking of “ticking down,” be sure to remember that we are “falling back” this weekend, and you should check the batteries in your fire alarms.

Today, I want to update you on our SACSCOC visit and call your attention to a couple of other important happenings next week. Read the rest of this entry »

Good Morning San Jacinto College Community,

This has been a week of crunch time and of celebrations!

Last Friday evening, we celebrated employees with the 27th Annual Service Awards Banquet.  This event recognized employees with 10 years to 40 years (in five year increments) for their service to San Jacinto College.   Three employees were recognized for 40 years of service (Deborah Anderson, Helen LaCour, and Michael Varnell)!  Congratulations to the 108 employees who were recognized that evening!! Good Morning San Jacinto College Community,

I hope you are loving this wonderful Friday and I hope each of you is ready for a relaxing Spring Break!

Before you head off for the break, I wanted to let you know that we have submitted the College’s ten-year reaffirmation of accreditation self-study report to SACSCOC (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges).  Many, many people across the institution helped with researching, writing, inputting, and submitting the report.  Thank you to those who worked on this important documentation of our work over the past ten years, in the context of the SACSCOC standards and principles set for us as an institution of higher education.

Good Morning San Jacinto College Community –

I hope all of you are enjoying the great fall weather and the many activities that are going on throughout the college.

TV Coverage of College Activities

We just wrapped up Hispanic Heritage Month. I was very impressed with the multitude of activities and we even got some airtime on Channel 13! Speaking of airtime, we also had a great piece run on the process technology program on Channel 26 just last Thursday! I appreciate all of you who respond when the media calls. They don’t give us much notice, and they want responses quickly or they move on to another college or program, and we definitely don’t want them doing that! Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

I began my week with several others from San Jacinto College at the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky. The conference theme, “The Race for Quality in the 21st Century,” fit not only the horse racing theme of Kentucky but also the recurring national educational agenda of quality, excellence, student success, and completion. The keynote speakers focused on confronting the challenges facing education (and the country), engaging all levels of the educational institution in solutions and new approaches, and addressing issues with a sense of urgency. Last week began with The Institute on Quality Enhancement and Accreditation sponsored by The Commission on Colleges – Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).  The Institute examined research on teaching and learning at colleges across the United States and  identified programs that demonstrate the assessment of student learning outcomes including gathering evidence, redefining and refocusing assessment, clarifying roles in assessment, and demonstrating that assessment leads to improved student learning.  There was also discussion around the challenges that colleges, especially community colleges, face in increasing degree production.  We must increase the degree production in order for the United States to regain our competitive advantage in the global economy.  The bottom line is that we must have many more educated workers.  One national speaker, Jane Wellman, claimed that a cultural shift is needed in most institutions – in decision-making, in data metrics, and in how quality and costs are evaluated.  I left this conference realizing that we have made significant progress in these areas, but we have plenty of work ahead of us.  It takes us right back to our continuous improvement process – Plan, Do, Check, Act. It applies to every area of San Jacinto College (SJC).
