Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

I hope you are enjoying this wonderful “winter” weather.  It seems like it should be spring break but we still have a few more weeks before that!

Today, I want to update you on three items:  hiring freeze, legislative session, and Board election.

Hiring Freeze: On College Community Day, I mentioned that Governor Abbott announced a hiring freeze during his State of the State address to the Legislature in late January.  San Jacinto College had been adhering to that directive over the past couple of weeks even though we and the Texas Association of Community Colleges (TACC) believed that the directive did not apply to community colleges.  I am happy to say that last evening, I received official word that the Governor’s Office concurs that the hiring freezer does not apply to community colleges.  Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community,

January has been a busy month!  I can’t believe it is nearly over.  I guess that is a sign how fast 2017 will be moving!  I want to provide you with an update on the following:  1) Enrollment, 2) 85th Legislative Session, and 3) Pathways.

Enrollment:  For the spring 2017 semester, our college enrollment is up — 2.4 percent in headcount and 2.5 percent in contact hours.  This is great news!  The deans, department chairs, and many faculty members have analyzed the enrollment areas so we understand gains and losses, but overall I am very pleased that we have netted an increase.   We will also be analyzing the spring enrollment in order to understand student persistence from fall to spring.  While recruiting new students is important, student retention and persistence are even more important. Our focus for the rest of the semester is retention and engagement. I know this is the hard work! Read the rest of this entry »

Update – June 27, 2016

Good afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

I hope your summer is going well and you are finding a way to stay cool! As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, I want to give you an update on credentials awarded, summer enrollment, and legislative prep work.

Credentials Awarded:

One of the College’s key performance indicators is the number of credentials awarded annually. Through spring 2016, we have 4,975 total awards for academic year 2015-2016.  Through spring 2015, we had 4,292 total awards for academic year 2014-2015. At this point in time, we are up nearly 700 awards for this year over the prior year. If we maintain the same number of awards for this summer as last summer, we will reach 6,800 total awards for this year! This is absolutely amazing since last year was the first time the College awarded more than 6,000 credentials in one academic year!  This is truly a collaborative and college-wide focus, and I thank each of you for everything that you do to support our students and the completion agenda! Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

Today is the start of early voting in Harris County.  Early voting continues through October 30th and election day is November 3rd. Our San Jacinto College bond referendum (San Jac Tomorrow as we are calling it) will be near the end of the Harris County ballot.  We have been mailing out to residents within our taxing district quite a bit of information about San Jac Tomorrow.  Please take a look at the bond materials on our college website at  It is important that college employees understand the bond program in order to respond to questions and informational requests. If you have a question on the bond, feel free to submit it at and you will receive a response. Also, encourage your friends, neighbors, and students to learn more about the bond program, to submit questions if they have a concern, and to vote in the election. Read the rest of this entry »

Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

May has passed and so has graduation.  This year at our college-wide commencement ceremony, 795 students walked across the stage with 9,570 guests in the audience.  What a wonderful turnout! Over the last two academic years, we have awarded more than 5,000 degrees and certificates each year. We hope that we can reach 6,000 degrees and certificates awarded in an academic year by 2019! Interestingly, last year nearly 1,000 students earned multiple credentials in the same year.

May was a busy month and this update will highlight the legislative session, a recent land purchase made by San Jacinto College, and board members. Read the rest of this entry »

Update – April 2, 2015

Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community –

Many of you may be aware that legislation has been filed in both the Texas House of Representatives (House) and the Texas Senate (Senate) that would authorize an individual possessing a valid concealed handgun license (CHL), issued in the state of Texas, to carry a concealed handgun on premises associated with certain public institutions of higher education. The bill would allow an institution of higher education to establish rules governing the storage of handguns in dormitories (please note that San Jacinto College does not have dormitories so this piece would not apply to San Jac), and would stipulate an institution, officer, employee, peace officer or handgun instructor may not be held liable for damages or cause under the provisions of the bill. The Senate bill is SB 11. It recently passed the Senate and has been sent to the House for consideration. The House version of the bill (HB 937) has now passed out of the committee favorably, and we are waiting to see how it will be referred for next steps but most likely will be placed on the House calendar for a vote on the floor. Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community –

Before you leave on Spring Break I wanted to update you on a couple of items.

1. Building Evacuation Drills (BED) – In the past, we have practiced announced BEDs, but after Spring Break we will begin practicing unannounced BEDs to more accurately evaluate the College’s response readiness for emergencies. The attached memo  describes the evacuation process and gives some guidance. Please read it and share with others who do not have email and also share this with your students.  As we conduct these unannounced BEDs, our goal is to evaluate our response time, compliance, and identify gaps and opportunities for improvements.  It is important that you, your students, your department personnel, and building occupants participate in the BEDs.  The best way to plan our response to an actual emergency is to practice and improve our response. It is easy to think that an event couldn’t happen at San Jacinto College, but we need to prepare so that if something does happen, we are ready to respond.  Read the rest of this entry »

Good afternoon San Jacinto College Community –

I am writing this update from Washington DC where I am attending the Association of Community College Trustees National Legislative Summit and will be meeting with many of our federal legislators.  Yesterday, I participated in a work session with representatives from the Department of Education and approximately 25 community college leaders from across the country. Our discussion was on the proposed national college rating system which is intended for roll-out during 2015-2016.  The proposed system is for 4-year and 2-year degree granting institutions, and the ratings will categorize institutions as high performing, low performing, and those falling in the middle.  Read the rest of this entry »

Good Afternoon!

I hope all of you got through April 15th (tax day) okay. I was surprised to hear that only 7% of Americans file an extension for their taxes!

As we think about this past week, I know each of us has been saddened by the incidents in Boston and West, Texas. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and those directly and indirectly impacted.

These events and the event at Lone Star College last week continue to weigh heavy on each of us. Even though the incident at Lone Star College was across Houston, we received many phone calls and questions from concerned students and employees. We issued a statement that San Jacinto College was not under an immediate threat so we could alleviate those concerns. Read the rest of this entry »
