Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

October is here and I hear autumn is in the air (maybe that is further north), but I am still hopeful our temps will reach a high in the 70’s soon!  I hope all of you are doing well as we continue to move forward with life and the semester after Harvey.  I know that many of you are still dealing with your own recovery efforts, and I hope you are getting closer to normal with each passing day.

I am extremely proud of the work that has happened throughout San Jacinto College over this past month.  Thank you for continuing to reach out to support your fellow employees, the community, and our students.  I want to thank the employees and supporters who contributed to the San Jacinto College Employee and Student Relief Fund.  Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

I hope you all are planning great feasts this week with your families.  I hear on the weather forecast that we will have wonderfully cool fall weather for Thanksgiving. After our long hot summer and warm fall, that is truly something to be thankful for! The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days and served 13 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans—sounds like plenty of good eating and calories! I hope you can find some time this week to relax, reflect, and enjoy the holiday. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

I hope all of you had a relaxing week-end.  Mine started out like many of yours did at “An Evening of Promise” with the Houston Symphony and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. This was the second year San Jacinto College hosted an event at Jones Hall, and we had nearly 2,300 students, employees, and community friends in attendance. It was a wonderful evening, and everyone with whom I spoke had a lovely time. I was lucky enough to sit on the side of the hall where I could see the hands, expressions, and body movements of Jonathan Biss, the pianist. He was absolutely amazing!! Hello San Jacinto College Community –

Did any of you run the marathon today?  That’s one of those items on my list that I would like to accomplish but haven’t yet. So to any of you who ran it – congratulations!!  Let me know who you are and if this was your first time to participate. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

This week was busy with trips to Austin and Washington, D.C., to review legislative agenda items at both the State and Federal levels. As you have heard, the emphasis at both levels is student success and completion and how funding will eventually be tied to these outcomes. There is also much discussion around how educational institutions can achieve these goals but still ensure that educational excellence and quality are the touchstones. These are important conversations and ones that the Board of Trustees, the Strategic Leadership Team, and I take part in through our Federal and State legislatures and organizations such as AACC, TACC, and THECB.  We will continue to emphasize these discussions and keep all areas throughout the institution up to date on these important issues and initiatives. If we don’t keep educational excellence and quality as our foundation, we—students, institutions, the region, and the country—will all lose in the long run. Read the rest of this entry »

Everyone is talking about our Chamber of Commerce weather, and I hope you are outside enjoying some of it this week-end!!

This weekly update is going to be a little unusual with a few college “be sure to watch for” updates and a couple of national items of interest.  Finally, I will end with an article that was forwarded to me by members of our San Jacinto College faculty. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community —

Another busy week….isn’t the summer supposed to be a slower time?  That is definitely a fallacy!

We began the week by welcoming home our National Championship baseball team, who took second place in the JUCO World Series!  I am proud of the coaches and players. They not only played hard and earned their wins; they also conducted themselves as gentlemen and represented our College with class and dignity!  Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers at San Jacinto College!!  I hope each of you enjoyed a day of fun, relaxation, or a combination of both.

One of the great features of San Jacinto College is all the activities and functions that are available on a regular basis, and this week has been jam packed.  I was fortunate enough to attend the Spring Choral Concert at North Campus, swing into the field day for the Emergency Medical Technology Department at the Central Campus, and celebrate the graduation ceremony with the South Campus.  Additionally, on Saturday morning, I welcomed 150 7th and 8th grade young women for a careers conference focused on exploring opportunities in the world of science, technology, engineering, and math. The conference was sponsored by the American Association of University Women and the Society of Women Engineers, with support from numerous San Jacinto College employees and the San Jacinto College Foundation providing lunch and contributing to the gift bags. Weekly Update – December 6, 2009

Sorry for my tardiness in getting out this weekly update.  The weather has played havoc on my schedule.  I actually got “snowed in” in Dallas on Friday (I was there for a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board meeting and all flights to Houston were canceled). Today, I went to Atlanta for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) annual conference, and I spent several extra hours in the airport due to some weather related issue. Oh well, better to be on the ground than in the air with weather issues!!
