Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

October is here and I hear autumn is in the air (maybe that is further north), but I am still hopeful our temps will reach a high in the 70’s soon!  I hope all of you are doing well as we continue to move forward with life and the semester after Harvey.  I know that many of you are still dealing with your own recovery efforts, and I hope you are getting closer to normal with each passing day.

I am extremely proud of the work that has happened throughout San Jacinto College over this past month.  Thank you for continuing to reach out to support your fellow employees, the community, and our students.  I want to thank the employees and supporters who contributed to the San Jacinto College Employee and Student Relief Fund.  Read the rest of this entry »

Good Afternoon San Jacinto Community,

I am excited to announce that on Monday evening, the Board of Trustees approved several revisions to the part-time faculty and staff salary tables.

The following salary rate increase for our part-time faculty will be effective January 1, 2017. The instructional rate for lecture classes will increase from $38.00 per contact hour to $42.00 per contact hour. In addition, we are matching that rate by raising our instructional rate for lab classes from $32.00 per contact hour to $42.00 per contact hour. This matching lab rate has been long sought by the Business & Technical and Health Sciences Faculty and Administrators. Read the rest of this entry »

Good afternoon San Jacinto College Community –

I love to talk about the amazing work going on at San Jacinto College.  Just yesterday, I was invited by a professor to his EDUC 1300 class where students were discussing the value of education, its impact on society, and what steps they needed to take to achieve their goals.  I then met with reporters who were interviewing our students about the tremendous career opportunities available in our region for students who complete their credentials in several of our technical programs.  I wrapped up the afternoon with an interview on the work that San Jacinto College is doing to engage public education and business and industry partners around the implementation of House Bill 5.  It was an exciting first day back from Thanksgiving break!! Hello San Jacinto College Community –

This was one busy weekend with re-enacting the battle at the 175th anniversary of San Jacinto Day, supporting the MS-150 bike ride, and scrambling to meet the tax deadline (glad there were those additional days until April 18th). I hope you found a couple of fun activities to keep you busy! Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I sure found it hard to be indoors during this past week – the weather was so beautiful that I wanted to move all my meetings outside!!  That wasn’t possible, but I did try to find a few extra minutes each day to enjoy the outdoors. I hope you did too! Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community —

Another busy week….isn’t the summer supposed to be a slower time?  That is definitely a fallacy!

We began the week by welcoming home our National Championship baseball team, who took second place in the JUCO World Series!  I am proud of the coaches and players. They not only played hard and earned their wins; they also conducted themselves as gentlemen and represented our College with class and dignity!  Read the rest of this entry »

Weekly Update – May 2, 2010

Happy May!!  Wow, we are wrapping up another semester and it seems like it just flew by!!

As I reflect back on my week, much of it was spent learning about our technical programs.  On Monday and Tuesday, I observed a number of the program review presentations that were conducted at the South Campus. I was quite impressed with the presentations and the conversations about successes, concerns, and needs. One presenter made the comment that she normally feels good when she completes a review and presentation, but in this case she realized that there was more work that needed to be done. Basically, she found that digging deeper into the data generated more questions about student success and future actions that should be considered. There were several interventions presented, such as the educational planning sheets, which allow faculty to work more closely with students in developing goals and timelines. This is a promising intervention that all three campuses are implementing.  I do plan to review the presentations that I missed. I know a great deal of time and work went into the program review process. It is critical that we take the time to analyze our programs in this type of detail, which is clearly part of our continuous improvement process (Plan, Do, Check, Act) and part of our San Jac Data & You initiative. Thank you to the faculty, department chairs, staff members, and deans who worked on the program review documents and presentations. Read the rest of this entry »

Weekly Update – December 6, 2009

Sorry for my tardiness in getting out this weekly update.  The weather has played havoc on my schedule.  I actually got “snowed in” in Dallas on Friday (I was there for a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board meeting and all flights to Houston were canceled). Today, I went to Atlanta for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) annual conference, and I spent several extra hours in the airport due to some weather related issue. Oh well, better to be on the ground than in the air with weather issues!!

I hope you are enjoying this November day – it feels like autumn has really arrived!!  It is nice to know that we have a short work week coming up. Just so you know next week, I won’t be doing a weekly update because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Weekly Update – October 25, 2009

on October 25, 2009 in Weekly Update | Comments Off on Weekly Update – October 25, 2009

What a week-end! Hope you are enjoying a little of it!!

For many administrators, this week began with a day and a half spent on program review. We looked at several instructional programs, including visual and performing arts, college preparatory, English, foreign languages, and speech. While I left with several questions I’d like to address, the information presented helped me gain a much greater understanding of several concerns including faculty staffing levels, equipment and facility needs, and budget. As we continue to develop the process, I envision that the program review presentation will first address college-wide priorities, vision, and implications; and the process would then focus on specific benefits and concerns at each campus. I also envision a greater discussion around student success, student learning outcomes, and the data that support our conclusions and proposed changes. Program review clearly fits into our continuous improvement model of plan, do, check, and act. Thank you to all who presented and to those who listened, discussed, and questioned.
