Good Evening San Jac Community,

I hope everyone had a great summer and hope you are all finding a way to stay cool. As we prepare to welcome back our students, I want to cover a few items around our enrollment efforts and emails to students.

First, deregistration takes place tonight for students who have not yet paid. Students have expressed concerns about the volume of email they receive so I want to make you aware of tactics already happening. Read the rest of this entry »

Update – January 27, 2017

Hello San Jacinto College Community,

January has been a busy month!  I can’t believe it is nearly over.  I guess that is a sign how fast 2017 will be moving!  I want to provide you with an update on the following:  1) Enrollment, 2) 85th Legislative Session, and 3) Pathways.

Enrollment:  For the spring 2017 semester, our college enrollment is up — 2.4 percent in headcount and 2.5 percent in contact hours.  This is great news!  The deans, department chairs, and many faculty members have analyzed the enrollment areas so we understand gains and losses, but overall I am very pleased that we have netted an increase.   We will also be analyzing the spring enrollment in order to understand student persistence from fall to spring.  While recruiting new students is important, student retention and persistence are even more important. Our focus for the rest of the semester is retention and engagement. I know this is the hard work! Read the rest of this entry »

Update – June 27, 2016

Good afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

I hope your summer is going well and you are finding a way to stay cool! As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, I want to give you an update on credentials awarded, summer enrollment, and legislative prep work.

Credentials Awarded:

One of the College’s key performance indicators is the number of credentials awarded annually. Through spring 2016, we have 4,975 total awards for academic year 2015-2016.  Through spring 2015, we had 4,292 total awards for academic year 2014-2015. At this point in time, we are up nearly 700 awards for this year over the prior year. If we maintain the same number of awards for this summer as last summer, we will reach 6,800 total awards for this year! This is absolutely amazing since last year was the first time the College awarded more than 6,000 credentials in one academic year!  This is truly a collaborative and college-wide focus, and I thank each of you for everything that you do to support our students and the completion agenda! Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

May has passed and so has graduation.  This year at our college-wide commencement ceremony, 795 students walked across the stage with 9,570 guests in the audience.  What a wonderful turnout! Over the last two academic years, we have awarded more than 5,000 degrees and certificates each year. We hope that we can reach 6,000 degrees and certificates awarded in an academic year by 2019! Interestingly, last year nearly 1,000 students earned multiple credentials in the same year.

May was a busy month and this update will highlight the legislative session, a recent land purchase made by San Jacinto College, and board members. Read the rest of this entry »

Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community:

I hope the fall semester is going well for each of you. The excitement with the start of the semester is still in the air, and each of us has a role in encouraging that excitement in our students. It takes a holistic approach to ensure students feel welcomed and understand the expectations of going to college, and know where to find support when they need it. Significant work happens in the classroom with the faculty members teaching, challenging, and engaging students, but we also know how important it is that each of us takes a moment to assist a student or visitor on campus or to offer a word of encouragement. Students often don’t know all the services and support we have to offer when they need tutoring, counseling, or other assistance.  I am attaching a list of the many support services we have on campuses, as a refresher for each of us. Remember that these services are critical in addressing the many needs in our students’ lives. Read the rest of this entry »

Good Morning San Jacinto College Community –

We are rounding out July and summer classes and aggressively preparing for fall. As I mentioned earlier in the month, there is nothing moving slowly for us. Rather, we are moving at high speeds to process, package, orient, test, enroll, and register 5,500 first-time-in-college (FTIC) students and another 25,000 in returning student for the fall semester. Along with these activities, we are

  • finalizing the annual priorities and budget for 2012-2013,
  • closing out the evaluation process,
  • hiring new faculty and staff to support our student success initiatives,
  • conducting a variety of trainings including department chair and Success at San Jac, and
  • closing out the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

Hello San Jacinto College —

We just completed the first official week of spring semester! I am sure that many of you feel that this can’t be right, since preparation leading up to that first official week began much earlier than when students finally arrived on campus. And this spring semester had much more preparation than those in the past. I am referring to the processes regarding the mandatory bacterial meningitis vaccination. The new law and requirement went into effect this month for students under the age of 30 years old who are entering or returning to college after a break in attendance. While not many, there are a few exceptions to the law. Students may request an exemption, but that process requires a special form from the State. If you are interested in learning more about the bacterial meningitis requirement, we have created a website and an electronic brochure located at http://www.sanjac.edu/meningitis. Hello San Jacinto College Community –

It is time to welcome in the month of August!!! And one more month of heat!!!

I was trying to think of something interesting to say about the month of August, other than that it is generally thought of as the “back to school” month, when I ran across a website with quotations for each month.  I really loved the quote for August, so I thought I would share it with you:

“Forever is composed of NOWS.” ~ Emily Dickenson, American Author

Hello San Jacinto College Community,

We are near the middle of July…can you believe it?  The Summer II session kicks off tomorrow and our enrollment is up for this second five weeks by 13.9%, and we are up 12.4% for the entire summer session.  I hope you all are hanging in there, and that this large population of summer students is excelling. To add some perspective to the percentages, let’s add some numbers to this. We have over 22,500 duplicated students enrolled this summer. Duplicated is an important term; it means each student could be taking more than one course within multiple parts of term. For example, 4,596 students are enrolled in the full summer 16-week session, 7,344 students were enrolled in the first 8-week summer session (Summer I), and 6,723 students are enrolled in the second 8-week session (Summer II). One student could be enrolled in each one of these three sessions so that one student would be counted as three enrollments. Read the rest of this entry »
