Good Evening San Jacinto College Community,

I hope you stayed warm this week-end!  When I hear about the weather in the northern and eastern parts of our country, I know that we have nothing to complain about, but, gosh, those were chilly temperatures for southeast Texas!!

Black History Month:  Since 1976, every American President has designated February as Black History Month.  San Jacinto College has a variety of activities scheduled to celebrate Black History Month so be sure to check out the events.

College Community Day Follow-up: Thanks to each of you who completed the assignment that I gave during my update session at College Community Day. As I said in my presentation, if you have any additional feedback for the assignment that you would like to provide, please send your handout via interoffice mail or reply to this email address (chancellor@sjcd.edu) by Wednesday, February 13th.  I read through the responses and feedback over the weekend; and overall, the comments were supportive and positive about the values, vision, and mission.  Read the rest of this entry »

Good Morning San Jacinto College Community,

This has been a week of crunch time and of celebrations!

Last Friday evening, we celebrated employees with the 27th Annual Service Awards Banquet.  This event recognized employees with 10 years to 40 years (in five year increments) for their service to San Jacinto College.   Three employees were recognized for 40 years of service (Deborah Anderson, Helen LaCour, and Michael Varnell)!  Congratulations to the 108 employees who were recognized that evening!! Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community –

The end of the fall semester and calendar year are near. I suspect that everyone is feeling the extra pressure that comes with the busy-ness of this time. It is always a challenge to balance the extra stress, excitement, work load, and time constraints. Add onto that the bizarre temperature swings we are experiencing, from near record highs today to highs in the 40s later this week. Perhaps you can relate to Henry Kissinger who said, “There cannot be a crisis next week.  My schedule is already full.” Hang in there.  The semester is coming to a close soon.

In this Update, I would like to let you know about some important topics that I hope will be helpful for you: Read the rest of this entry »

Good Afternoon —

We are rounding out February with the kick-off of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (HLSR).  Even if you aren’t a rodeo fan, you can’t miss the energy and excitement that rodeo brings to Houston!  I attended the 26th Annual Career & Education Day presented by the Houston Hispanic Forum (HHF) on Saturday and heard from the HLSR representative that more than $10 million is given per year to support education in our region; these funds are mainly in scholarships.  This is amazing!  I also had the opportunity to hear Eva Guzman, Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, speak about education.  She challenged the audience of students (elementary, middle school, and high school) and their parents to choose education.  She focused on three themes: choices, commitments, and consequences. If we think about it, these three themes apply to many aspects of our own lives and work.  Spend a few minutes to think about these themes this week.

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

For all of you who have been eagerly awaiting the fall season, I think it has arrived!! I attended the South Campus Fall Festival and 50th Anniversary Celebration Friday evening, and it was quite chilly while we were outside playing some of the games and taking the hay ride! There was plenty of excitement in the air, especially with all the kids and a few adults dressed in their scary, cute, or strange costumes!  My favorites were the Chinese dragon dancers and the tribute to Dr. Parker Williams, the college’s first librarian and the first president of South Campus. Hello San Jacinto College Community –

Okay, last week, I asked if anyone had played in a Super Bowl Game or if anyone had attended a Super Bowl Game.  Well, I couldn’t locate anyone here at San Jacinto College who had played in a Super Bowl Game, but I did get six responses about attending a Super Bowl Game: Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

Last week, I asked the question if any of you ran the marathon, and I received responses from four of our people who ran in it.  Two even finished under 3 hours and 51 minutes!! So this week, I am going to ask if there is anyone who has ever played in a Super Bowl Game. Or, has anyone who’s attended a Super Bowl Game?  I am anxious to hear the responses on this one!!  For the rest of us, enjoy the game or find some quiet time to enjoy a few hours of relaxation.
