Update – August 22, 2016

Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community:

I hope you have been able to stay dry this week and that you are ready for a relaxing weekend before fall classes begin on Monday! Today, I want to provide you with updates on the 2016-2017 budget, fall enrollment, and annual priorities.

  1. On Monday evening (August 15th), the Board of Trustees approved the 2016-2017 budget. The budget development process was challenging as we addressed adequate funding of key expenses and repurposed dollars for strategic priorities. All departments were asked to reduce expenses by 2 percent and areas with reduced enrollment took additional reductions to shift dollars to higher growth areas. Approvals for new budget requests were limited because of finite resources and our desire to address existing commitments. From a revenue standpoint, we updated our tuition and fee projections based on current year enrollment, incorporated the new tuition and fee changes that take effect this semester (fall 2016), firmed up exemption and waiver projections, and increased bad debt expense estimates. Additionally, the budget is based on a projected enrollment of 1.8 percent (with a stretch goal for state funding purposes of 3 percent). There were no changes to state appropriations since this is the second year of the biennium. Luckily, the College’s tax base is strong with projected increases in property valuations of 3.21 percent. These numbers will be adjusted as certified values are received from Harris County later this month. Read the rest of this entry »

Update – August 21, 2015

Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community:

I hope you are staying dry on this wet day!  Today, I want to give you updates on the 2015-2016 budget, fall enrollment, and San Jac Tomorrow.

  1. On Monday evening (August 17th), the Board of Trustees approved the 2015-2016 budget.  Reduced appropriations from the State and increased unfunded State benefits had a negative impact on our overall budget.  Luckily, the College’s tax base is strong and the increases in that base provided the estimated additional revenue required to limit budget cuts.  Also, the budget is based on a projected enrollment increase of 1.5%.  At this point, the budget is fluid because we are waiting for the final decision on property tax values needed to complete our taxation calculations, and because enrollment is still in process (see below for more on enrollment).  Expense dollars were repurposed within budgets, and approvals for new budget requests were limited, due to uncertainty about resource streams. Included in the budget was a $2.4 million compensation pool to cover full-time employee merit raises. Read the rest of this entry »

Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community –

It has been a busy summer!  As we start the fall semester, I wanted to give you a few updates.

The College’s Strategic Plan Extended through 2015

The College’s strategic plan for 2010 through 2013 was approved by the Board of Trustees in September 2010. Over the past three years, we have made considerable progress on the College’s four strategic goals of: Student Success, P-16 Pipeline, Workforce & Economic Development, and Our People. These strategic focus areas have served us well, but it was agreed that there is still more work to be done. Therefore, the Board of Trustees, SLT, and myself have agreed to extend the strategic plan through 2015. Read the rest of this entry »

Good Evening San Jacinto Community! And to our Veterans on this day of remembrance, thank you for your service, dedication, and sacrifice.

I hope many of you joined in the Veterans Day activities this weekend, including the events at each campus last Friday. I spent Sunday calling my family members who have served our country, and I also let them know that they will be honored with a plaque on the Wall of Honor at our San Jacinto College Veterans Centers. If you are interested in honoring or memorializing someone, contact Ruth Keenan at the Foundation office (ruth.keenana@sjcd.edu). Read the rest of this entry »

Good Morning San Jacinto College Community –

We are rounding out July and summer classes and aggressively preparing for fall. As I mentioned earlier in the month, there is nothing moving slowly for us. Rather, we are moving at high speeds to process, package, orient, test, enroll, and register 5,500 first-time-in-college (FTIC) students and another 25,000 in returning student for the fall semester. Along with these activities, we are

  • finalizing the annual priorities and budget for 2012-2013,
  • closing out the evaluation process,
  • hiring new faculty and staff to support our student success initiatives,
  • conducting a variety of trainings including department chair and Success at San Jac, and
  • closing out the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
