Good afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

I hope you are enjoying the summer and finding time to take vacation.  Many people seem to think that those of us in higher education do not work in the summer, and I always have to chuckle over that because there is tremendous activity this time of year at San Jacinto College. But I hope with all of that busy-ness that you find some down time and do a few fun things this summer with family and friends!  Or maybe just a break at home or on the beach.  And don’t forget to stay cool and hydrated! Good Morning San Jacinto College Community –

I hope all of you are enjoying the great fall weather and the many activities that are going on throughout the college.

TV Coverage of College Activities

We just wrapped up Hispanic Heritage Month. I was very impressed with the multitude of activities and we even got some airtime on Channel 13! Speaking of airtime, we also had a great piece run on the process technology program on Channel 26 just last Thursday! I appreciate all of you who respond when the media calls. They don’t give us much notice, and they want responses quickly or they move on to another college or program, and we definitely don’t want them doing that! Read the rest of this entry »

Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community –

It has been a busy summer!  As we start the fall semester, I wanted to give you a few updates.

The College’s Strategic Plan Extended through 2015

The College’s strategic plan for 2010 through 2013 was approved by the Board of Trustees in September 2010. Over the past three years, we have made considerable progress on the College’s four strategic goals of: Student Success, P-16 Pipeline, Workforce & Economic Development, and Our People. These strategic focus areas have served us well, but it was agreed that there is still more work to be done. Therefore, the Board of Trustees, SLT, and myself have agreed to extend the strategic plan through 2015. Read the rest of this entry »

on July 31, 2012 in Weekly Update | Comments Off on Update – July 31, 2012

Good Morning San Jacinto College Community –

We are rounding out July and summer classes and aggressively preparing for fall. As I mentioned earlier in the month, there is nothing moving slowly for us. Rather, we are moving at high speeds to process, package, orient, test, enroll, and register 5,500 first-time-in-college (FTIC) students and another 25,000 in returning student for the fall semester. Along with these activities, we are

  • finalizing the annual priorities and budget for 2012-2013,
  • closing out the evaluation process,
  • hiring new faculty and staff to support our student success initiatives,
  • conducting a variety of trainings including department chair and Success at San Jac, and
  • closing out the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

Weekly Update – September 9, 2011

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

We are two weeks into the fall semester, and I hope that all of you have recuperated from the hectic pace and the long lines that go with the kick-off of a semester. Now that the semester is underway, we need to move into our “Just One More” focus, which is based on the premise that each of us (all staff, administrators, and faculty) has a role in encouraging students to stay committed to completing their classes successfully and finishing the semester. We want our students to finish what they start.  This begins with one class, one semester, and then, ultimately, certificates and degrees. Those certificates and degrees translate into completion for us, but they translate into accomplishment and achievement for our students and marketable credentials for jobs. Hello San Jacinto College Community –

Last week, I asked the question if any of you ran the marathon, and I received responses from four of our people who ran in it.  Two even finished under 3 hours and 51 minutes!! So this week, I am going to ask if there is anyone who has ever played in a Super Bowl Game. Or, has anyone who’s attended a Super Bowl Game?  I am anxious to hear the responses on this one!!  For the rest of us, enjoy the game or find some quiet time to enjoy a few hours of relaxation. Hello San Jacinto College Community –

Do you feel a sense of excitement in the air?  No, I am not talking about shopping and holidays, but, rather, the impending conclusion of another fall semester. I hope you can find time to enjoy the many activities on our campuses, and I know through it all that you are staying focused on helping our students as they finish their classes.  They feel the intense pressure of upcoming finals and those end-of-the-semester assignments that sneaked up on them. Be sure you offer that extra encouragement and motivation to get them through this last week. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

Did you enjoy the “fall back” this weekend? Even though I slept in, I felt like I accomplished more than on a “normal” day and had a little extra spunk! Let’s see how long it lasts!

On Monday, we had our monthly Board workshop and meeting. At the workshop, the focus was on strategic goal #3, Workforce and Economic Development. We reviewed a detailed report completed by the Workforce and Economic Development Council which included a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) assessment, review of major workforce sectors in our region, and recommendations for enhancing our efforts in the workforce training area. Additionally, we reviewed the institutional monitoring report on our Continuing Professional Development division; our non-credit offerings cover such areas as leisure/lifelong learning, workforce training, and business and professions. As part of this report, we reviewed various key performance indicators related to industry partnerships, workforce grant activities, new program developments, and small business support activities. If you are interested in reviewing the reports, they can be viewed here:

You will hear more about strategies around this area in a few weeks. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

This week I spent several days with three of the College’s Trustees at the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Leadership Congress. This was the 41st annual conference, and its theme was: Community Colleges are Indispensable to Reinvigorating the Economy: Renewing Our Commitment to Access, Excellence, and Student Success. Throughout the conference activities, there was an excitement regarding the increased national focus on community colleges and the growing realization that community colleges play an extraordinary role in reinvigorating the economy.  There were many discussions around the imperative for community colleges across the country to emphasize and focus on student success as we continue our mission of access and opportunity. All community colleges were called to action – the action to be deliberate about student success and to join the National Community College Completion Challenge. Read the rest of this entry »
