Good Afternoon San Jacinto College Community,

October is here and I hear autumn is in the air (maybe that is further north), but I am still hopeful our temps will reach a high in the 70’s soon!  I hope all of you are doing well as we continue to move forward with life and the semester after Harvey.  I know that many of you are still dealing with your own recovery efforts, and I hope you are getting closer to normal with each passing day.

I am extremely proud of the work that has happened throughout San Jacinto College over this past month.  Thank you for continuing to reach out to support your fellow employees, the community, and our students.  I want to thank the employees and supporters who contributed to the San Jacinto College Employee and Student Relief Fund.  Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

As I reflect on the first two weeks of October, I have to smile. It has been an amazing two weeks! Let me give you some highlights.

We began the month with a celebratory 50th anniversary photograph with nearly 800 participants, including students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, and retirees. I was astonished at how quickly this activity came together and how festive it felt! Thank you to all of the participants and to the organizers! The photo is available for download on the College Flickr site…here is the link for you:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/sanjacintocollege/6219855897/ Read the rest of this entry »

Happy October San Jacinto College Community!

I don’t know what happened to September, but October and fall have arrived! And we have actually cooled off a bit! I hope you enjoyed some of the great Chamber of Commerce weather this weekend!

This past week we kicked off our 12-week courses (Take 2), so you may see a few more students around the campuses. I don’t have official enrollment on the Take 2 classes, but the initial numbers look quite promising. Just so you know, these Take 2 courses are reflected in the spring contact hours reported to the State (anything after the official census date, which is the twelfth class day for fall, goes into the next reporting period). Our contact hours for fall were down slightly (.4%), so these enrollments are important for us in maintaining our overall state funding for the second year of the biennium. Hello San Jacinto College Community –

It’s been a few weeks since my last update, but plenty has been happening.  Before spring break, I distributed an email regarding the four phases of our budget plan and details about the Voluntary Severance & Separation Plan (VSSP). Last week, the Strategic Leadership Communication Council (SLLC) met to discuss this information, and this week the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) and I will conduct four communication forums throughout the institution. During these forums, we will discuss the budget challenges, our budget plan, and the VSSP.  We will address questions about the VSSP, the decisions being taken by the legislature, and their impact on the College. Hello San Jacinto College Community –

What a week!!  San Jacinto College has been in the center of the limelight!!  Let me explain.  On Wednesday in Dallas, the College received the Partners Award from the Texas Workforce Commission, due to the work of the Continuing and Professional Development Division and the over $4.4 million in training grants that are currently under management. Hello San Jacinto College Community –

This week I spent several days with three of the College’s Trustees at the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Leadership Congress. This was the 41st annual conference, and its theme was: Community Colleges are Indispensable to Reinvigorating the Economy: Renewing Our Commitment to Access, Excellence, and Student Success. Throughout the conference activities, there was an excitement regarding the increased national focus on community colleges and the growing realization that community colleges play an extraordinary role in reinvigorating the economy.  There were many discussions around the imperative for community colleges across the country to emphasize and focus on student success as we continue our mission of access and opportunity. All community colleges were called to action – the action to be deliberate about student success and to join the National Community College Completion Challenge. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Independence Day!

This is one of my favorite holidays. I hope you are all enjoying some BBQ and good friends and family as we celebrate this important day in our nation’s history.  As you know, this day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, which declared our independence from Great Britain.    Read the rest of this entry »

Good morning —

Last week was a busy one with Monday starting out in Austin with Marie Flickinger, Chair of the Board of Trustees. We presented our student success agenda to the University of Texas Community College Leadership Program, including the development of our strategic plan, mission, vision, goals, and initiatives. It was great to have so many wonderful and exciting initiatives to discuss, and it is clear that we are trying to focus our resources on areas that can make a difference in student success.
