Hello San Jacinto College Community –

Last evening, I attended a performance of the San Jacinto College South College & Community Choir. This group will be traveling to New York City at the end of the week to perform as a Debut Choir at Carnegie Hall Saturday, May 29th. Last evening the audience experienced the Carnegie Hall performance, and what an outstanding performance it was!!  The line-up included pieces composed especially for the debut, and for one of the pieces our South Campus Choir is the “only choir in North America performing it.” Congratulations to this group, to Cindy Stevens, and to San Jacinto College!  This is an amazing honor and success that comes only with hard work and dedication!!  I also want to thank the many people who have financially supported this trip and the preparation to perform at Carnegie Hall. Approximately 20% of the cost of the debut is being paid from college funds.  The remainder has been paid directly from choir members and from a tremendous fundraising campaign, including special activities, private donations, grants, and support from the San Jacinto College Foundation through Student Success Initiative funding. Again, thank you, congratulations, and “break a leg” on May 29th!  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Week-End San Jacinto College Community!!

I bet many of you are breathing a sigh of relief after completing finals, grades, and graduation!  We sure know how to pack many critical activities into a short time period! I hope you can catch your breath before you head into next week’s busy-ness, summer hours, and then the mini-session!

I have to begin this correspondence with a few legislative updates, but to be perfectly honest, it is difficult to know where to begin. The conference committee on the budget has been established, but it is unlikely to be considered without a special session.  Again, this is a guess, but indicators point in that direction.  Momentum points (funding based on performance) passed in the House. If it continues to move forward, funding of momentum points would be considered an incentive model beginning the second year of the biennium. Additionally, the bill on carrying concealed handguns on college campuses passed in the Senate this week, and passage in the House is very likely. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

By the time you read this, I hope we’ve had some rain that will at least partially relieve the impact of the drought and fire warnings.  If we don’t see rain by the end of the day on Monday, some of us might need to consider a ceremonial rain dance! Read the rest of this entry »
