Good Afternoon San Jacinto College –

Well, we are into autumn and I do feel a slight change in the weather!! Hope you are enjoying the week-end!!

On Tuesday, the Board Building Committee and the Board Finance Committee met in preparation for the October 4th Board Meeting. At the Building Committee meeting, we discussed the status of all construction projects (and there are many).  We have moved into the child care centers at North and Central, and the punch lists are being worked.  The name of these facilities will change slightly to reflect our focus on not only child care and development but also on education and the family nucleus.  These centers and lab schools are absolutely beautiful. Open houses will be scheduled, so watch for updates. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello San Jacinto College Community –

This past week was “Board” week – I use that term because we had a Board meeting and workshop on Monday.  It is always difficult to explain the Board process, which includes a great deal of preparation, review, evaluation, committee work, and discussions prior to any decisions being made.  Many times these processes take several months before they reach the Board action stage.  “Board” week, for me, is the accumulation of this ongoing work, which results in recommendations and official actions by the Board; so that we, the employees, can move forward and implement decisions. Good Evening —

I hope you are having a great week-end and finding some time for family, friends, and fun (okay, maybe football too)!

I had the opportunity to share in a remembrance of 9/11 at Ellington Field on Saturday morning. It was a ceremony to recognize our Hometown Heroes and their commitment to preserve our freedom.  It was a beautiful celebration, and I was most honored to represent San Jacinto College at this event. Hello San Jacinto College Community –

Happy Friday!!

I am sending the Weekly Update early this week due to the holiday weekend. I don’t know how many of you know the origins of Labor Day, but I found that the first Labor Day in the United States was first celebrated on September 5, 1882, in New York City. In 1894, it became a federal holiday when following the deaths of a number of workers during the Pullman labor strike, President Grover Cleveland created the celebration to reconcile the government with the labor movement. The legislation to recognize Labor Day as a national holiday was rushed through Congress with a unanimous vote and signed into law six days after the end of the strike. That is actually pretty amazing — receiving unanimous approval by Congress and signed into law in six days — wow!  Despite how the holiday began, it is now typically celebrated as a symbolic end of summer with a day of rest.  I hope you enjoy the holiday weekend and the cooler weather that appears to be on the way.
